The pre-production stage of the language acquisition is also referred to as the “silent period”. In this stage the student incorporates the new language which they are trying to learn. In this stage, the student mostly remains silent and learns cues from those who speak the language proficiently. On an average this stage lasts for about 4-6 weeks, depending upon individual pace of development. In this stage the student has minimal understanding of the language and cannot produce any verbal responses. Even if they can, it does not go beyond the basic yes or no. Keeping in mind the characteristics of this stage, it is essential that teachers are appreciative of the efforts made by the new learner. It is important to keep in mind that the learner is not ridiculed or discouraged in any way. Only when the efforts made by the new learners are appreciated, only then will they be feeling encouraged to continue and improve.
